How to Prepare Before Your Movers Arrive

A little preparation before moving day can make all the difference. Because many local moves are charged by the hour, having your boxes packed, labeled, and ready to go helps everything run smoothly and keeps costs down. When the Next Door Movers crew arrives at your door, being organized ensures a fast, safe, and stress-free transition into your new home.

Finish packing as much as possible; securely close and label boxes; separate valuables, medications, documents, keys and items you’ll transport yourself; dispose of anything you don’t want moved; confirm parking/access at both locations; reserve elevators when required; and tell us in advance about pianos, safes or unusually heavy items.

Disconnect electronics; charge your phone; prepare a small first-night box; empty and defrost the refrigerator/freezer when necessary; disconnect washers/dryers or other appliances that require professional disconnection; and keep important documents with you.

Clear hallways and walkways, keep children and pets in a safe area away from the moving path, make sure boxes are closed and ready, identify items that are not going on the truck, and make sure the crew has access to the property.

I strongly recommend a simple system such as KITCHEN — FRAGILE, MASTER BEDROOM, KIDS ROOM, GARAGE, etc. Clearly labeling the destination room helps our movers place boxes correctly at your new home and reduces unnecessary moving time.

If possible, decide where large furniture will go before the truck arrives. You can even place simple signs on bedroom doors—Bedroom 1, Bedroom 2, Office, etc.—so the crew knows exactly where everything belongs.

If you’re running out of time or aren’t sure how to prepare something, don’t worry.
